I saw the play and it was breathtaking. I love Jennifer Holliday and I really cannot accept anyone singing 'Am I'm Telling You' but her. It so sad & a shame that the Entertainment/Movie Industry did not give props to Ms. Holliday. The same thing happend to Julie Andrews when she was not asked to do the movie of 'My Fair Lady' even though she did the Play of 'My Fair Lady' If it was not for Jennifer Holliday there would not ba a Movie. I do agree you cannot compare the silver screen with a stage play. If Jennifer Holliday was in the movie she would have to be toned down. Ms. Holliday will be reconized and she will have a resurge in her career. The Universe will see to it. She cannot be denied for too long. 'And I'm Telling You, She's not going' She's here to stay. Good on Jennifer Hudson and her interpetation of a song that cannot and will not ever be interpetated like the original.

Wow... All I can say is you can never forget where it all started. Jennifer Holliday is the original and I applaud her. It's because of the original cast that the new movie was even possible and I am grateful! I'm sure Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce', and Anika Rose would agree. The movie Dreamgirls is also a hit and and a must see. I must say Jennifer Hudson did her thing and it is now her time to shine. She gave me chills everytime she opened her mouth to sing! Beyonce' didn't do too bad herself. When she performed "Listen", I cried. It really moved me. I saw more of B's acting side and I saw her lose her self in this part and actually become the character. I think this is the start to a serious acting career. Watch the "Listen" video and you can still feel the power. I was just so impressed with the entire cast... They all deserve awards, every last one of them. I've already seen it three times and will continue to go... Oh, Eddie Murphy... He still has it! So glad to see him in his own skin, not as donkey, the clumps, or just a voice; but the Eddie we all love!

I love dreamgirls:
Would love to have a copy of the original broadway play too. This way...all the talk would stop. Live plays and movies are not even on the same playing field.

Play verses a Movie - Plays are live and the participants do it repeatedly night after night.
In front of hundreds of people.

Jen. Holiday can't be topped...she did it live over 1,500 times. Jen Hudson is good, but she is copying from the master...retake after retake...cut after cut. All in the movie are not the first and have studied the originals.
Which is not a bad thing. Everyone does it.

To me it's apples and oranges. Plays verses movies can not be compared. Different venues. No retake during musical plays and you havn't even started talking about the practice, traveling, loss of voice, sickness, injury, family emergencies, or pay repeatedly night after night.

I leave you with a final thought to compare:
Movie - can't work...they stop or hold production and wait for you. Play - can't work...there's a fill in and they replace. Sick or not the show is happening...with or without you.

I agree, Tiffnlo. But to be fair to my friend Joel, I think he's being protective of Jennifer Holliday, who is going through a pretty rough time if articles like this one are to be believed.

J. Hudson was absolutely awesome in the movie, she was the star.

J. Holliday's voice is stunning as well, but to me they both did an excellent job, they both gave me chills-FLAT OUT (get off Jennifer Hudsons back Joel)

J.Hudson did an excellent job with the song and the movie, excellent but I must give my nod to J. Holliday for the powerful display of emotions and strong vocal performance! I have watched this J. Holliday clip hundreds of times, it's just incredible! I would love to see a copy of the original play in it's entirety, that would be a treat!

Effie is a character in a Broadway musical that has been turned into a major motion picture, "Dawn" -- if that is your real name.
