As of right now (9:16 PM Pacific Time), CNN and NBC are predicting that the Republicans will finally lose their complete control over the Federal Government and that the House of Representatives (maybe the Senate?) will change to Democratic Party control.
Thank God.
George Bush is a danger to this country and to the world. Congressional Republicans should be ashamed for allowing him to accumulate so much power, failing to investigate war profiteering, manipulation of intelligence, and countless other scandals.
Under Karl Rove’s Machiavellian advice to use 9/11 for political gain, the GOP has tried to scare the American people into voting again and again to increase GOP power.
Thank God the American people finally rejected this.
It’s sad to think how much we’ve lost in the past six years and how much irreparable damage has been done. Thousands are dead and injured in a needless war. Key environmental regulations have been dismantled. The world no longer respects us. And we’re going to be fixing the mess in Iraq for years to come. And whatever happened to that balanced budget?
On the other hand, the light is finally visible at the end of the tunnel and I feel like celebrating. My friend Joel sent me this youtube video. It captures my mixed emotions at the moment:
UPDATE (11/13/2006): Frank Rich summed it up perfectly in his opinion piece in this weekend’s New York Times: “What a week this was! Here’s to the voters of both parties who drove a stake into the heart of our political darkness. If you’ll forgive me for paraphrasing George Allen: Welcome back, everyone, to the world of real America.”
